Riga City Council City Development Department has concluded an agreement with AS Ceļuprojekts on the elaboration of a sketch project and an environmental impact assessment for the 3rd and 4th stages of the Riga North Transport Corridor.
“Regardless of the currently observed drop in the economic activity in our country and in the world, the development of strategically important projects cannot be suspended. The North Transport Corridor is one such project. The economic crisis will be over sooner or later and we must be ready for that. The transport infrastructure must be ready to provide the required transit capacities,” indicates City Development Committee Chairman Sergejs Dolgopolovs.
A tender was announced in March 2009 on the elaboration of a sketch project and an environmental impact assessment for the 3rd and 4th stages of the Riga North Transport Corridor, from Daugavgrīvas iela to the A10 motor road (Rīga – Ventspils) junction at Priedaine. A total of seven bids were received from bidders. At the Procurement Commission meeting on 2 June, 2009, AS Ceļuprojekts was announced as the tender winner.
AS Ceļuprojekts will elaborate the sketch project and environmental impact assessment for the 3rd and 4th stages, and will also prepare a report on the environmental impact of the Riga North Transport Corridor for all stages in general. The total length of the 3rd and 4th stages of the newly built express road, depending on the selected alternative variant, is approximately 13 to 15 km, and will be located in the territories of three municipalities – Rīga, Jūrmala and Babīte Region. The task of the tender winner shall also be to estimate and determine the approximate motor road expenses and to plan its construction stages.
The Riga North Transport Corridor is the largest transport infrastructure project in Riga in recent decades.
The project aim is to relieve downtown Riga of traffic congestion, include Riga Port in the European significance roads network and increase the competitiveness of the eastern-western transport corridor offered by Latvia.
A convenient express road crossing Riga in the western-eastern direction and bypassing the city’s historical centre shall be built as a result of the project implementation. The road is scheduled to be approximately 27 – 30 km long. In the west, the North Corridor will be connected to the Riga–Jūrmala–Ventspils motorway at Priedaine and in the east – to the Vidzeme motorway in Berģi. The North Corridor will be integrated into the structure of Riga streets with 10 – 12 multilevel crossings. The motor road shall also cross the 0.4 km wide Daugava River.
