City Development Committee Accepts One of the Versions of the Brīvības Alternative Route

On 22 October 2008 the City Development Committee of the Riga City Council accepted one of the three offered sketch project versions for the 1st stage of the Riga North Transport Corridor – the Brīvības iela alternative.

Riga City Council is anticipated to take the final decision shortly. The decision on the general version of the Brīvības iela alternative is required to continue elaboration of the sketch project.

The Environment Supervision State Bureau has performed assessment of impact on environment for three versions of location of the Riga North Transport Corridor 1st stage, in order to choose the most appropriate location of the route, recommending to continue further elaboration of the third offered alternative version of the construction project.

In its turn, the company Faber Maunsell, Technical Expert of the Riga North Transport Corridor Project, has prepared the Expert Statement on the assessment work report of impact on environment of the Riga North Transport Corridor 1st stage, acknowledging that the third version of the Riga North Transport Corridor 1st stage is the most appropriate for further promotion.

The third version of the route falls within the determined red lines corridor by 97% (the best figure in comparison with the two other versions), this version can be built in stages and it creates the smallest adverse effect on the environment.

The 1st Stage of the North Transport Corridor, or the Brīvības iela alternative, is an expressway leading to Riga from the A2 motor road up to Vairoga iela. Versions of the route’s path can be seen at http://www.ziemelukoridors.lv/pages/gallery.php?l=lv&tema=2&subtema=4&id=18
